108 Silly Ways to Die

This is a decently entertaining FMV horror experience that is held together by its humor. It is basically a parody, with a few jump scares and a tiny bit of romance. You get invited to explore an abandoned medical school and join one of three female companions. With the facility overrun with zombies, the ultimate goal is to find an antidote.

Each of the three companions will take you through a different route, although major locations are revisited. The other two show up occasionally, briefly, before you are isolated again. During each of their individual adventures, one companion (Lan Xueqi) gets sick from a bug bite and becomes overly affectionate, another (Chunri Huitao) starts turning into anime characters at random, and the last one (Chen Chuchu) generally stays herself.

Some choices earn hearts, and with enough you unlock their full ending. There are also a handful of branching paths that do feel substantial. It will take just over an hour to journey with each companion and six to see every scene. The game has enough romance, but this is about a 30:70 split in favor of horror.

As a horror parody, 108 Silly Ways to Die can be amusing in spurts. Usually most choices will lead to death and it is the type of game where the least obvious choice is probably the way forward. Some of the zombies can be talked down. Others can be distracted with weird objects or fought off. While the translation isn’t great, the dialogue also provided a few laughs. That said, the adventure was a little boring during my third run (with Chuchu) and the frequent dying gets old in places.

Video quality occasionally suffers a little because it’s often dark. And the camera flashlight can make the companions look washed out. It has some decent close-ups, and the main actresses are good, especially Lan Xueqi. Voice work is almost entirely ADR (automatic dialogue replacement) but not bad. The game may have been stronger if it was more of a group experience and less of a parody, but it’s still okay for what it is.
